Digital Literacy Program in Northern Nigeria
In September 2023, a community centre in Northern Nigeria received six computers and a laptop through a local partnership to launch an ICT literacy program aimed at empowering the local community.
“I couldn’t even switch on a computer. I was so afraid of technology that I was scared to even use an ATM—I thought that if I pressed the wrong button, I would lose my card,” said Abdulrazak Mohamed, one of the participants in the digital literacy program.
The workshop, which targeted senior citizens and people with disabilities, was successfully completed in August this year. For Ishattu Aminu, the motivation to join was different. “I wanted to help my granddaughter more. She’s 6 years old, and they ask for a lot of information at school. Now, with the computer skills I learned quickly, I can support her better,” she shared. “Although the first class made me nervous, and the technology seemed intimidating, now I enjoy being here and feel that I’ve overcome my fears.”
This initiative is helping bridge the digital divide in Northern Nigeria, giving participants the confidence and skills needed to engage with modern technology.
